Intel today introduced the Core i7 processor, the first member of its Nehalem processor series, pitching it at desktop PCs running games, video editing and other home applications. Business-oriented server versions of Nehalem are expected early 2009.

Perhaps trying to steal some thunder from Intel - which introduces its latest Nehalem chips on Monday - AMD today announced availability of its 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor (codenamed Shanghai), which is claims delivers up to 35% more performance with up to a 35% decrease in power consumption. Dell, IBM and Microway have announced servers based on the new chip.
