Storage giant EMC has acquired “certain assets” of open source specialist SourceLabs, confrims Brad Silverberg of Ignition Partners, a SourceLabs investor. A number of SourceLabs employees have joined EMC, and are expected to work within the company’s recently formed cloud infrastructure business, though how they will be contributing is unclear.

Oracle jas joined the Xen Advisory Board, an organisation set up to promote the open source Xen hypervisor (commercialised by Citrix Systems). Oracle’s own virtualisation offering is based on Xen, though it also offers a version of Red Hat’s Linux, which is dropping Xen in favour of the rival KVM hypervisor that it recently acquired. Oracle’s move tends to suggest that it sees Xen as its strategic future.

Cisco Systems is a company used to revenue and profit growth, and with its traditional network router/switch market becoming saturated, it’s now looking for other markets to bring in money in the future. And one of those markets is the equipment that physically sits next to its networking gear in data centres … namely servers themselves. That’s why the company has been talking about “unified computing” quite a bit of late, and that means that Cisco wants it all.

The Red Hat sponsored Fedora Project today released Fedora 10, the latest incarnation of its free, open source Linux operating system distribution. Fedora releases are generally viewed as a testing ground for functionality that makes its way into Red Hat’s commercial Linux releases. Independent reviewers have given the release high marks, suggesting it is “brimming with features” and “rock solid.”

Merrill Lynch is adopting IBM’s iDataPlex servers to build an internal cloud within its data centres to reduce power consumption, and related costs. As the investment bank is integrated into Bank of America, cost savings are a top priority. Specifically, the servers will help Merrill Lynch build and evaluate new risk-analysis programs.

The CME Group - the world’s largest derivatives exchange, has become a member of the Linux Foundation (LF), a nonprofit organisation dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux. By joining the Linux Foundation, CME Group will be able to collaborate with key Linux developers and vendors. CME Group’s Vinod Kutty, associate director and head of distributed computing R&D, will become chair of the Linux Foundation’s End User Council. The Council is a group of the largest Linux end users who use the forum to collaborate and educate themselves on technical, legal and community efforts.
