Andrew’s Blog: Moving Interactive Forward – Slowly

Unsurprisingly, there has been little news from Interactive Data on how its ‘strategic review’ is progressing. As you’ll recall, the company took everyone by surprise – including its staff – with the announcement that it’s exploring options as its current owner, Pearson, looks at focusing on its core business, which increasingly seems to be not financial.

Andrew’s Blog - Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad

When we first heard the latest theory on the succession plan for the former Reuters – that is to say, the market data vendor now known as Thomson Reuters Markets – we thought it was just so much tittle-tattle. It was back in October or November, and the integration of Reuters with Thomson Financial had barely been completed at best (and in fact is probably still ongoing). Surely the time wasn’t yet right for a change at the top, given how recently the key positions had been set post-merger in 2007.

Pete’s Blog - Sunrise on Oracle

Oracle last week finally completed its $7.4 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems, and the company wasted no time in setting out its road map for how its software and Sun’s hardware (and some software) are going to be packaged together so that the sum is greater than the two parts.

Pete’s Blog - Let’s Focus on Inter-Party Latency

Latency - and keeping it low - remains a concern for the financial markets. We at A-Team know, because our latest poll at low-latency.com found that 80% of respondents reckoned it will be more of a concern in the future. With all this algo and high frequency trading going on, events in the world would seem to back up what people told us. That said, 15% said that latency would be less of a concern in the future. Perhaps those people are from the old guard exchanges, like London and NYSE, who have latency improvement plans in place.

Our new poll (see the poll section on the middle right of the new low-latency.com home page) is about the subject of inter-party latency: “How important is measuring inter-party latency to your firm?” we ask. Judging by the interest in a new standards initiative focused on it, I would expect the poll to declare that it is very important.

Pete’s Blog - Cloud Performance for the Front Office?

I hear lots about Cloud Computing these days, mostly from vendors about its promise to deliver on-demand compute and storage while reducing costs. I hear words like flexibility and agility, and terms like TCO and talk of applications, such as risk modeling, analytics and pricing. Now, thanks to some benchmarks run by upstart Cloudsoft Corp., with its partners Solarflare Communications, Arista Networks and Citrix Systems, the performance word has been added to the mix, and it’s not at all bad. Which makes me wonder whether - or really when - we’ll see cloud technology underpin trading in the front office.

Pete’s Blog - It’s Getting Better …

… Getting better all the time. That’s my assessment of the economy as far as spending on IT by Wall Street is concerned. Sorry, having just picked up the remastered Beatles classic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, I couldn’t resist tapping Lennon/McCartney’s track 4 title for this blog post.

Pete’s Blog - Now it Makes Sense … Blade and NYSE Euronext

A few inquiring minds have been asking me lately about a company called Blade Network Technologies, and specifically why it is participating in a panel “Building the World’s Fastest Trading Network” at next week’s High Performance Computing on Wall Street conference - it’s a panel that I am moderating, and also includes Stanley Young from NYSE Euronext. I have to say, it’s all been a bit hush hush until today.
