From the safe distance of February 2010, we can look back at 2009, rake over the coals and think carefully about what lies ahead in 2010.

Before I start my survey, I must point out that I am indebted to the Financial Information Forum and its membership, especially the exchanges, for providing a vast array of vital statistics and updates. I have data from www.marketdatapeaks.com and my own thoughts of course; but it is not easy to beat the hard cold facts of FIF market capacity data.

Trading Firms See Increased Diversification of Market Data

Financial institutions on both the buy and sell sides will extend and diversify their use of market data providers as they adjust their strategies for the changing trading environment. But the emphasis will be on quality rather than quantity, with data users seeking return on investment and sourcing the best solutions for specific needs.

Thomson Reuters Urges Community Approach to Consolidated European Data

Thomson Reuters has added to the debate on a consolidated European order book data feed similar to the US Consolidated Tape Plan, with a white paper that sets out proposals for improving the compilation of consolidated data, but falls short of suggesting that a single consolidated tape is the answer for all market data users.

UPDATE: Private Equity Firm General Atlantic Acquires 7.5% Stake in Markit

Buying pic US-based private equity firm General Atlantic has acquired a 7.5% stake in bank owned pricing and valuations supplier Markit in return for a US$250 million investment in the company. The stake values the rapidly expanding data and post-trade services provider at around US$3.3 billion and has meant General Atlantic CEO Bill Ford has bagged a seat on the vendor’s board.

Stop Press: General Atlantic Buys ‘Significant’ Stake in Bank-Owned Markit

Greenwich, Conn.-based private equity firm General Atlantic has acquired a “significant” minority stake in bank-owned pricing and valuations supplier Markit in return for a “substantial equity investment” in the company. While the size of the stake wasn’t disclosed, it’s significant enough to warrant a board seat for General Atlantic CEO Bill Ford.
