Bloomberg has acquired London-based alternative energy news and data provider New Energy Finance, signalling its movement into the renewable energy space. New Energy Finance specialises in coverage of the alternative energy space.
The concept of machine-readable news – discussed in a recent A-Team special report – gained momentum this month with Deutsche Boerse’s acquisition of Need to Know News, and the announcement of a collaboration between pioneering news integrator RavenPack and Alphacet, which provides a framework for development of analytical applications for trading.
Caplin Systems has added Thomson Reuters news services to its Caplin Trader single-dealer portal platform. The arrangement means that Caplin Trader clients will have access to Reuters News services to complement the trading capabilities of their customer portals.
The curious world of regulatory news will watch with interest as Thomson Reuters moves to acquire Hugin Group from NYSE Euronext. The deal, announced this month, is expected to raise regulatory eyebrows, since it involves the acquisition of a Primary Information Provider (PIP), as defined under the UK Financial Services Authority’s interpretation of the EU’s Transparency Directive, by a Secondary Information Provider (SIP).

Deutsche Boerse, in its first real news initiative since its acquisition of Market News International from Xinhua Finance, used the Sifma Technology Management conference in New York last month to introduce its CEF alpha+ macro news feed, an ultrafast data feed that supplies macroeconomic news for immediate processing by trading applications. The move brings Deutsche Boerse into the ranks of suppliers of machine-readable news services, among them Reuters and Dow Jones.
While the U.K. government has been promoting former City types as potential candidates to fill the glut of headteacher vacancies in the British education system, Dow Jones Newswires has another idea. The news provider is stuffing its news rooms with former bankers, hedge fund managers, analysts and other refugees from the Credit Crunch.
Psydex, which provides search and analysis of news sources in real time, has received $3.5 million in funding to launch Psyng, a portal that scours newswires, Internet feeds, TV closed captions, blogs and other sources of “chatter”. Psyng reveals statistical patterns and trends in social networks, human behavior and financial markets.
Developers of low latency trading and market data applications are likely to benefit from new Intel Xeon 5500 Series microprocessors introduced today. Based on Intel’s new Nehalem architecture, the chips are expected to offer much improved performance and less power consumption compared to current chips, especially in the areas of multi-threading, memory access, interconnect technology for co-processors and XML processing.
Need to Know News has begun providing its Lightning Bolt algorithmic news feed service within the Equinix Frankfurt-North (FR2) International Business Exchange (IBX®) data centre, in addition to its current availability within Equinix centres in the New York and Chicago areas.
Thomson Reuters has teamed up with AlphaSimplex Group to add a new NewsScope Event Indices (NEI) capability to its machine-readable news offering. The new addition seeks to bolster Thomson Reuters’ machine-readable offering as it competes with rival Dow Jones Newswires to deliver news in a format that can be consumed by event-driven trading and risk management applications.
Interactive Data Corp.’s eSignal unit has added TSX Datalinx’s and Canadian Press’s joint TSX/CP Equities News service, which offers bilingual, real-time Canadian corporate news service combining Canadian Press news with historical, real-time and fundamental data from TSX Datalinx.
The dismantling of Fredy Bush’s Xinhua Finance empire continues apace with the acquisition of Market News International by Deutsche Boerse’s Market Data & Analytics group. The news comes days after Xinhua’s decision to shut down its Xinhua Finance News operation, which produces the Xinhua Finance Greater China Equities Newswire, and raises questions about the Stone & McCarthy Research Associates unit.
