Weekend Talks in Basel Spur on Risk and Data Agenda for 2010

JC Trichet ECBAs predicted by A-Team Group last week (see here), the weekend’s discussions in Basel between central bankers, regulators and a number of representatives from the private sector helped to kick off the risk management agenda for 2010. The group discussed the proposals enshrined in the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision’s (BCBS) published in December (see our coverage here) and indicated that time was of the essence in getting these finalised before the end of the year.

Stage Set for BIS Talks with Industry on Risk at Weekend in Basel

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has invited a group of central bank representatives and CEOs of private sector financial institutions, including Citi and BlackRock, to meet in Basel this weekend to discuss the risk related challenges of the current market. The talks are a reaction to concerns about the possible return of “excessive risk taking” amongst financial institutions and will likely include significant debate about the recently released Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) proposals (see our coverage here).

Is Cloud Computing an Answer to Risk and Reference Data Storage?

This week’s FS Club debate on cloud computing suggested that despite all the confusion around the exact definition of a cloud, what it does represent is potential for the future in terms of data storage. Nick Davies, chief technology officer for Lombard Risk Management, suggested that a private cloud could be used for purposes such as enterprise risk management and a public cloud could be used for reference data storage. Of course, not everyone agreed with Davies…

Risk and Compliance Top the Bill at This Year’s Sibos

Last year’s Sibos was a time for shock and the beginnings of a realisation about the catastrophic impact of the financial crisis on the market, as Lehman Brothers collapsed and the ripples spread outwards. This year’s Swift user conference instead was exemplified by sober reflections on the extent of the damage done and how the world of risk management and tighter regulation can get the industry back on track.

Risk and Regulation Tops the Agenda at Sibos’ Welcome Session

Unsurprisingly, given the events that occurred during last year’s Sibos conference, risk and regulation topped the agenda during the first day of sessions at Swift’s annual conference in Hong Kong. Joseph Yam, chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), informed delegates of the central bank perspective on regulation following the financial crisis in his welcome address.

G20 Finance Ministers Identify Next Risk Related Steps for Regulatory Overhaul

Last week’s meeting of the G20 finance ministers in London saw broad agreement amongst the participants on a range of key issues including corporate governance, increased capital requirements and new liquidity risk measurement requirements. The group produced a summary of their conclusions and a statement highlighting their “substantial progress” towards achieving global consensus on the risk related issues in the market.

Four Industry Associations Ask G20 Finance Ministers to Ensure Reforms Promote Open Markets

Four financial sector trade groups have this week released a statement urging G20 finance ministers gathered for talks in London to be wary of introducing regulatory measures that may create barriers to market entry and competition or encourage regulatory arbitrage. The Investment Industry Association of Canada, the Japan Securities Dealers Association, the London Investment Banking Association (Liba) and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (Sifma) stress the importance of open markets in their statement.
